Reds, Yellows, Oranges—Fall is coming and so is a new season of square dancing on Monday nights at Batavia Silver Stars. Our two Open Houses begin the season, September 26 and October 1 from 7:00 to 8:00. If you know of someone who might have said “square dancing sounds like fun”, now is the time to invite them for two free evenings of square dancing, fun and exercise and as always—scrumptious refreshments. No reservations needed. Weekly dancing for September (but not Open House) is Plus Teach from 7:00–8:00 followed by club dancing until 9:30.

October 29 will be our Halloween Party—in costume preferred (but not mandatory). Our contribution this night: games, books, toiletries and new socks, winter hats and gloves for the upcoming winter will be donated to Eagle Star Housing.

November 5 we will be honoring our veterans. All vets (hopefully in uniform) will dance free as guests of Batavia Silver Stars this evening. Donations for the evening of non-perishable food items or $$ for turkeys will be donated to the Salvation Army.

This club dances on some Friday nights. Although we do not dance every week, we have great fun when we get together! We have had a few new people join us and hope a few more will try DBD.

No new movements are taught, we just look at movements you already know from different positions than you are used to; challenging but interesting and fun. Please check the Promenader for our schedule.

Our Tuesday afternoon dancing continues. We dance 3:30 to 5:00 and dance Phases 3 & 4. This dancing will continue through November. Please join us some Tuesday afternoon. Casual dress.

Our Wednesday club offered cha/rumba lessons this summer and we had about 4 couples taking rounds. It is so exciting to see new dancers learn to round dance. Please join us some Wednesday evening.

There will be no dance on Sunday, September 2, allowing everyone to rest up and have fun with other activities over the Labor Day weekend. During this time we will be moving back to our winter location at the First Baptist Church of Chili, 3182 Chili Avenue, Rochester.

We hope to have lots of new dancers at our two Open House “Introduction to Modern Square Dancing” events. These events are free for everyone and will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 on September 9 and 16. Please encourage all your non-dancing friends to come out and join us for a fun evening of dancing.

NOTE: Our regular dance schedule will change beginning with the first dance after our Open House events. Class will be from 4:30 to 6:30 (angels, please note!). We will have half hour early rounds from 6:30 to 7:00 and club dancing from 7:00 to 9:00.

Sundays, September 23, 30, October 7, 14, and 21, and November 4, we will follow our NEW regular schedule.

Copy Cats

The dance season may be out for the summer but the social activities are just heating up for the Copy Cats. On May 21, twenty ladies attended a showing of “The Book Club” at Pittsford Cinema. A few weeks later, 10 people watched the Redwings lose to the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs; but nothing can dampen a day at the ballpark, especially when there is ice cream. And after a year of waiting (the epic “rain out” of 2017) we were able to have some friendly competition at Parkside Whispering Pines miniature golf. Thirteen people stepped on the green, going for the best prize of all—bragging rights!

School is soon to be back in session for the Copy Cats. We are hosting an Open House on Tuesday, September 18 followed by our first class on Tuesday, September 25. Our instructions are held at the Bay Trail Middle School (1760 Scriber Rd., Penfield NY). Please join us for great dancing and friendship.

Mike Callahan will call/cue our Rusty Hinge Dance on Saturday, September 8, kicking off our 2018–2019 season. We will be chowing down on a potluck dinner at 5:30, be sure to bring your favorite dish to share; 2x2 dancing, alternating Plus and Mainstream, will begin at 7:30. On Saturday, September 22 at 7:00, we will host Alice Bubel (Cueing) & Mike Callahan (Calling) for a night of dancing that is sure to be rust-free.

On Saturday, October 6 at 7:00, Eileen Webster (Cueing) & Glen Paulhamus (Calling) will be your captains to kick off Columbus Day weekend. Finally, what would October be without a Halloween dance? Avoid the traffic and fly your broomstick to our Saturday, October 27 dance featuring Eileen Webster (Cueing) & Hip Boot Boys (Calling). It’s sure to be a frightening good time.

On Saturday, November 3 at 7:00, we plan to honor all Veterans with free admission to our Veterans Day dance; we will be featuring Mike Callahan who will be calling & cueing. Be sure to come out and show your appreciation to these great individuals. Mike will be back Saturday, November 17 at 7:00, along with Eileen Webster (Cueing), for our Thanksgiving dance. To show some square dancing thanks we are asking dancers to bring pasta, sauce and cereal to help replenish the Penfield’s ecumenical food shelf.

All our dances are held at the First Baptist Church of Penfield (1862 Penfield Rd. Penfield, NY). For more information on these and upcoming dances, please check out our flyers in the Promenader or on our website (www.copycatsdancing.org). We hope to see you there.

Our official “Welcome Back Dance” will be on September 13, with FREE admission for visitors—new graduates and seasoned dancers. That evening we will combine Mainstream and Plus.

Our October 25 dance will be our Halloween dance when all those who come in costume will be admitted FREE.

We have several other dances scheduled so check the Promenader calendar for our listing.

“Summertime and the living is easy” and hot, humid, rainy … But nothing can dampen our camping spirits. We still have three weekend campouts remaining this year. Be sure to check out our flyers in the appropriate section of the Promenader. The flyers provide information on who to contact to make reservations. There are cabins and trailers for rent through CampBell Campgrounds and several motels are located near-by. Come for a day, and evening or the weekend. We promise that you will have a great time. Howie Williamson will be our caller with his wife, Donna, doing cues on those weekends.

On a sadder note, we want to express our condolences to Cindy Adams with the passing of her husband, Brian. Brian was a cuer with the Southern Tier Wheelers for many, many years. Their love of dancing was apparent and watching the two of them inspired many of us to become better round dancers. Brian will be certainly be missed by many, many people.

We usually dance Wednesday evenings at the United Church of Pittsford, 123 South Main St., just south of the village of Pittsford. We hope to see you there!

We begin our 2018–2019 dance year with Gil Porter calling and Eileen Webster cueing at a potluck dinner and dance on Wednesday, September 5. Social hour begins at 6:00, with dinner at 6:30, and full Plus level dancing at 7:30. Bring tableware and a dish to pass. For the potluck, please contact hostesses Susan Thomas 585-385-2155 (suetinny2@yahoo.com) or Barb Keane (787-4061) so we know how many places to set. See our flyer.

The second Wednesday after Labor Day, September 12, our Plus Teach and Review Workshops begin. These Wednesday workshop “classes” are from 7:00 to 8:30 The club segues to a full Plus level after that, and continues at that level until 10:00. Mainstream dancers who graduated in May 2018 and are interested in learning Plus calls are particularly invited to join these Workshops beginning September 12. As an incentive, we are offering free admission to those dancers on that night (September 12). Experienced dancers who are reviewing Plus level calls are welcome to blend into workshop tips at any time (most of us find we profit from this review). See our flyer. Except as otherwise noted, the September 12 dancing format is repeated at all our dances.

Wednesday, October 24, we will dance in Halloween costumes (or as close to that as you care to make it.) See our flyer. We are not dancing on Halloween itself (October 31). Why? Many of our members like to stay home and experience the thrill of passing out trick or treat candy to a small army of neighborhood goblins. Many also like to remain on site to protect their property, if the need arises.

We will have a low-key Jerry Carmen Memorial Dance on November 7. There will not be a workshop this night. We expect an evening crowded by shared memories. See our flyer for details.

On Wednesday, November 14, we are again sponsoring a Sadie Hawkins dance. Women are requested to bring a plate of cookies to be bid on by men at the dance. Men bring your wallets. See the flyer.

There will be no dance Wednesday November 21, the Wednesday immediately preceding Thanksgiving. November 28 will be a regular dance.

WINTER HOLIDAY DANCES: The Winter quarter does not begin until December, but we can’t leave you vulnerable to being surprised by two holiday dances.

Our Holiday Dinner Dance is on Wednesday, December 12. Gil Porter will call; Lisa Treichler will cue; and Giuseppe’s will cater. You don’t need to bring anything except your smile. See our flyer for details, including the menu. Reservations for the dinner are needed by December 5. Contact Susan Thomas 585-385-2155 (suetinny2@yahoo.com.) or call Barb Keane at 585-787-4061.

Also plan to attend our (Village Squares) New Year’s Eve dance on Monday December 31, to welcome in the New Year! The Hip Boot Boyz will call and Eileen Webster will cue. It will be at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2000 Highland Avenue (corner of Winton and Highland in Brighton). Plus level dancing is from 8:30 to 12:30 a.m. Hors d’oeuvres, beverages, dessert, hats and noise makers will be provided. A lower price is available to those making early reservations, so mail or give your reservations to Peter or Sally Emmel, 24 High Hill Drive, Pittsford, NY, 14534—or call them at 585-381-5049.
