Batavia Silver Stars

As we travel through the mist of this busy holiday season, make sure one of your stops is at our Potluck Christmas Dinner, Monday, December 17 at 6:00. All you need to bring is a dish to pass and your place setting. Beverages will be supplied. Jan or Carol would appreciate an RSVP by December 15 from non-club guests if you are planning to attend this special night. Backpack Program items can be donated any time in December—donations include individual sized food items a child can prepare that will fit in a backpack.

NEW YEAR’S EVE DANCE—Something new this year, December 31. Club dancing will be 7:00 to 10:00. Dance all evening and still be home in time to welcome in 2019. See caller Bill Ryan 716-517-6012 or Lucy Pietrzykowski 585-993-2186 for advanced tickets.

Brrrr! Those cold January nights brings our annual Soup Night January 21. Bring a crock chuck full of your favorite soup to share. Perhaps someone would make homemade bread or rolls. Warm up our tummies as well as our bodies that night! Donations this evening will go to Eagle Star Housing—games, movies, books, toiletries, new socks, winter hats and gloves.

Be sure to wear red February 11 for our Valentine’s Day Dance. You may receive a Valentine treat. Cash donations will be accepted for Troop coupons this evening.

Batavia Silver Stars dances almost every Monday evening all year long from 7:00 to 9:30 at the Batavia VA Center. Come visit us for an evening of laughter, exercise, good eats and mostly great dancing. An evening of square dancing is said to equal approximately 3 miles of walking. What a great way to exercise with friends!

If inclement weather prevails, check first with Bill or Jan before venturing out on Monday nights.

Copy Cats

The Copy Cats started the dancing & class season off with a bang this year. Over the past few weeks there have been 30+ Kittens attending our Tuesday classes and more keep coming. We even have a couple visiting from Belarus attend our class. Vadzim is a systems engineer in the School of Robotics in Minsk, Belarus and Natalia is the director of Aksioma IT which provides learning opportunities for children from age 6 and older in the field of basic design and programming using educational LEGO sets in Gomel, Belarus. They are here on an exchange program with USAid Community Connection and while here they were interested in learning American square dancing. A special thanks goes out to all the angels that come and support the class each and every Tuesday.

On September 15, a number of our members promenaded for Jerry at Ontario Beach Park. Our team ended up raising $700 for the Walk to Defeat ALS. On September 21, the Copy Cats lead by Amy Aeckerle raised $1,100 and counting for MS. Gary Bubel called for seven squares and gift baskets were raffled off. Last but not least, the Copy Cats recently performed a demo at the Cracker Box Palace Farm Animal Haven located in Alton, NY. Cracker Box Palace is a registered non-profit, no kill farm haven that serves as the Large Animal Rescue for Wayne County and has an all-volunteer Large Animal Rescue Team. It is a unique place where farm animals of every kind come to recover from illness, neglect or abuse.

Now we are a dancing club after all so let’s be back to our winter dances. On December 15 the Copy Cats will be having their annual Holiday dance and dinner. Mike Callahan will be calling and cueing at 7:30 but if you come early there will be a scrumptious dinner. Reservations for dinner need to be in by December 10 and the cost is $14.00 per person.

On January 19 tell all your class members to come out and show their stuff at our Snowflake Ball. This class friendly dance will feature Jeanne Harter and Ron Brown; rounds start at 7:00 and 2x2’s will follow at 7:30. This was my first dance as a Copy Cats Kitten 4 years ago and it was sure a hoot. Be sure to come out and support all those learning to square dance.

The Copy Cats will close out the winter with a Valentine’s dance on February 16. Ron Brown and Chuck Meyer will be serenading us with their lovely voices late into the night. Rounds start at 7:00 and 2x2’s will follow at 7:30. Love will surely be in the air!

Dalton Gang

Hello fellow square dancers; hoping you are having a great season so far. Back in September, towards the end of the month, we had our East Meets West dance. We were hoping we had a good attendance, but it was not the case having about two or three squares. We had lost a lot of money and we certainly can’t blame it on the Copy Cats who had their dance every Saturday night which happened to be on top of our event. The big Question for our club is are we going to have our East Meets West dance next year? Again, we just keep losing money on it year after year, except that one year we broke even. We have been having club meetings on this and the end result is the possibility that we are not going to have it next year. The club is going to put it to a vote the beginning of November. In the next newsletter, I will definitely keep you guys posted on the outcome of the vote.

Our Christmas party is on the 4th of December at the Kesheque Elementary School in Dalton. It will just be a get-together party for the club with no dancing; so come join the camaraderie if you’re in the area. We love to see new faces. Bring table service, since there will be plenty of food, and a gift marking it His or Hers for the Christmas game we do every year. It should be a good time. We did something new last year; we sang Christmas carols and hopefully, we will do it again this year.

Who can forget our big event coming up on March 26? Our ever popular Maple Tree Inn Dance. We will have our fill of Pancakes at the Maple Tree Inn and then we dance at the Elementary School in Dalton. The flier is already in the Promenader, if you need more information. Hope to see you there.

The cold, wintery weather really puts a damper on our camping season. Many of our members are “Snow Birds” and will be dancing in other locations for the next several months. But we have some special dancing and dining plans for the months of June, August and September. We have adjusted the times to accommodate people who need to travel to join us. Look for flyers elsewhere in the Promenader. Village Squares

We usually dance at the United Church of Pittsford, 123 South Main Street, Pittsford, from 7:00 to 9:30 on Wednesdays. Variations from our usual dance pattern are noted below.

DECEMBER

On Wednesday, December 12 we are having our Holiday Dinner Dance. Gil Porter is calling and Lisa Treichler is cueing. Dancing is at the club level (Plus). The schedule is as follows: appetizers at 6:00; dinner at 6:30; dance at 7:30. The club will provide everything—just come and enjoy the people, the food, and the dancing. See our flyer for the menu. Dinner reservations are required no later than Wednesday December 5; $20 per person covers both dinner and dancing. For reservations call Susan Thomas at 385-2155.

There are no dances on December 19 or December 26.

Village Squares is again sponsoring a New Year’s Eve dance. Join us on Monday December 31, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2000 Highland Avenue (where Highland crosses Winton) to welcome in 2019. The Hip Boot Boyz are calling and Eileen Webster is cueing. Plus level dancing is from 8:30 to 12:30 a.m. Hors d’oeuvres, beverages, desserts, hats and noise makers will be provided. Advance reservations are $40 per couple or $5 more at the door. Mail or give reservations to Peter and Sally Emmel, 24 High Hill Drive, Pittsford, NY, 14534. Or call them at 585-381-5049.

JANUARY and early FEBRUARY

There is no dance on January 2.

Wednesday January 9 follows our usual dance pattern and is mentioned here for only one reason—this is your last chance to dance with our caller Gil Porter before his winter vacation.

While Gil is away, we will be dancing to a Ron Brown Winter Trilogy on three Wednesdays—January 16, January 30, and February 6, 2019. We contracted with Ron to call three Wednesdays in 2018, but the weather (real and as forecast) cancelled all three of those dances. So we are giving Ron carte blanche to call in 2019 any way he wants. We know from experience that you will enjoy these dances.

There is no dance on Wednesday, January 23. Instead, mark your calendar for the first of our Fabulous Friday dances on Friday, January 25—a Tropical Paradise Dance. Bill Ryan called and cued for us last year, and we enjoyed the dance so much we have invited him to call and cue for us again. See our flyer.

FEBRUARY

After the Bill Ryan dance and the Ron Brown trilogy of dances, do we go back to Village Square’s usual dance pattern? No. Happy Valentine’s Day is a holiday tailor-made for dancing. We can’t escape the temptation to celebrate Valentine’s Day on Wednesday, February 13 (one day early). Note that Gil Porter will just be back from his winter vacation and eager to call square dance tips. Eileen Webster will be cueing rounds. Again, see our flyer.

We end the winter quarter the way we began it on December 5—with “regular” dances on Wednesday, February 20 and Wednesday, February 27.

TWO UPCOMING EXTRA-SPECIAL DANCES (mark your calendar!)

(1) Saturday, April 6 is the Tri-Club dance with Howard and Donna Williamson.

(2) Wednesday, May 15 is Amateur Caller Talent Night at Village Squares. This is your chance to step in front of the mic! Contact Peter Emmel with any questions or ask for help from any of the callers in our area.

IN SUMMARY:

Don’t try to be a hero. Don’t try to remember all the dances you want to attend. Print out the flyer “Village Squares SPECIAL Dances for 2018/2019.” Perfect attendance for the Winter Quarter is within easy reach. Check the “Schedules” tab in the Promenader for a complete and up-to-date listing of Village Squares dances in the Winter Quarter.
