Champagne Whirl-A-Ways

Minors may attend at select dances! And only at Jim Gotta dances (see schedule). There may be a beginner’s tip just for them, if they wish to join the fun. Please call Diane ahead.

Saturday afternoon dances will be our mode through March. April 13 will be the resumption of our evening dance program. The exception being May 11, which will be from 2:30 to 5:00; another good chance to bring a child or youngster.

Spring outdoor aromas are nice for our dance hall. If you have available branches of balsam fir, or concolor fir, or red pine, bring some. I suggest not mixing them. Might be good to check ahead with Diane.

Our Facebook account is out of date presently. (cwasdfacebook@gmail.com) I will not get involved with Facebook. There is no one else capable of handling it at this time.

Outstanding snacks of all kinds are always an important part of Champagne Whirl-A-Ways dances. Take a break and eat! Dinner is close by too. Call Diane for a synopsis.

Dance colors might be nice for St. Patrick’s, followed by Think Spring. Crazy Tie Night is followed by the Daffodil dance; wear yellow. Mothers’ Day (I am open to suggestions). Patriots wear red, white, and blue. The last dance until fall is Hawaiian Night, and that is for the imagination.

Please travel to our various clubs and see new angels in disguise. After all, that is what square dancers are. Smile. You might be on camera.

Cloverleaf Squares

March will blow in with some great callers and cuers. Jim Gotta will be holding us together during the month but then Keith and Jeanne Harter will be hosting our 49th Anniversary and St. Patrick’s Dance on the 17th (this will be a class club dance). But, wait, hold on, Chuck Meyer will be cueing on the 3rd; Lisa Treichler will be cueing on the 10th; and Mark Thone will be returning for the last two weeks in the month.

We will be joining up with the Copy Cats and Village Squares square dance clubs to host our annual Tri-Club Dance at Archangel School on Chili Avenue. Out-of-town caller and cuer, Howie and Donna Williamson, will spice up one of Rochester area’s favorite dance of the year. It will be held on Saturday, April 6, 2019, so put it on your calendar. The following night, on our regular night, however, we will rest and have no dance. But we will have our class so come out and help us angel (Mike Callahan will be back).

Please check our website at “www.cloverleafsquares.com” for our full schedule, as well as flyers and details of all these upcoming fun events.

Copy Cats

It may be 20 degrees outside but the Copy Cats are hotter than ever. On December 15, we held our holiday dinner and dance. Our successful catered dinner consisted of chicken french, shaved roast beef, oven roasted potatoes, mixed veggies, salad and dinner rolls. Along with Copy Cats members, we had 63 guests for dinner! And when it came time for dancing, Mike Callahan serenaded 8–9 squares on the dance floor! We would like to thank the square dance community for all their support at this dance; it was truly a good time had by all. On January 5, Mike returned to the Copy Cats accompanied by Chuck Meyer (cuer). Again we had a stellar turnout; there were 7 squares on the floor that night. Our 23 kittens were all ready to show their stuff at the Snowflake ball but mother nature had other plans. A make-up dance is scheduled in July (Christmas in July themed!) with Ron calling. All kittens are welcome as this will be a class friendly dance. As a reminder, if a dance is canceled, we will notify all club presidents, a notice will go up on our website and the Promenader will be notified.

And wow just like that we are almost done with winter! But the dancing is nowhere near finished for the Copy Cats. We have three dances in March this year, two of which are themed. On March 16, we will be having a St Patrick’s day dance and potluck. Betsy Gotta will be calling and Roy Gotta will be cueing so be sure to come dressed in green with your favorite dish to pass. Dinner begins at 5:30 and dancing will follow from 7:00– 10:00. Maybe you will have some luck and win the 50/50 raffle. On March 30, we will be having our annual April Fool’s Day dance. Early rounds with Mark Thone begin at 7:00 and 2x2s with Gil Porter begin at 7:30. This dance will be class friendly with announced plus tips. And don’t worry, there are no pranks planned … or are there??

April will be a light month for the Copy Cats. We will have one dance on April 13; Eileen Webster will be cueing and Mike Callahan will be calling. Our light schedule was necessary due to scheduling around the Tri-Club Dance (April 6th) and Easter. All flyers for our dances can be found on the Copy cats website (https://copycatsdancing.wordpress.com/dance-schedule/) as well as on the Promenader website. We look forward to seeing you all at our upcoming dances and events.

Village Squares

To catch the flavor of our dances, think of a dancer bouncing on a trampoline. Some dances (like bounces) simply affirm a tried and true balance. Some dances get a little fancy; a rare few have somersault, heels overhead.

Village Squares is normally a Wednesday evening club—that is to say, the club dances on Wednesday evenings more often than not. Our usual dance location is the United Church of Pittsford, 123 S. Main Street, Pittsford. Usually Gil Porter is our caller. Members provide snacks. Apparel is recommended for special dances, but never absolutely required. Finally, a new dance time from 7:00–9:30 has been adopted. When all the usual features of a dance are present, we call the dance a regular dance. In the special dances listed below, the regular dance features noted above are assumed unless otherwise noted.

Special dances in one way or another break the rules for regular dances. To get a summary of special dances, you should consult our SPECIAL DANCES FOR 2018–2019 flyer. Also, each of the special dances mentioned below has its own flyer.

We are not dancing the first Wednesday in March, March 6, Ash Wednesday.

The second Wednesday in March, March 13, is Pi(e) night, celebrating the calendar approximation of pi (3.1416 ad nauseam). Greg Marling will call this dance.

There is no dance Wednesday, March 20. This dance has been skidded over to Friday, March 22, which you may recognize as the Vernal Equinox. Black (signifying night) or White (signifying day) dance apparel is suggested. Note the dance time: from 7:30–10:00.

On Saturday, March 30, we plan to steal Copy Cats’ banner. An optional appendage to the banner steal is dinner at a nearby restaurant with Village Squares cohorts. To help with the head count required for a banner steal, speak to or phone one of the numbers at the end of this document.

Village Squares is joining Copy Cats and Cloverleaf Squares in the Tri-Club dance on Saturday, April 6. Early Rounds are offered from 7:00–7:30. Announced Mainstream and Plus tips and II–III Rounds are offered from 7:30 to 10:00. Howard Williamson is calling and Donna Williamson is cueing. The dance location is at the Archangel School, 2400 Chili Ave.

Wednesdays April 3 and April 10 are regular dances.

Wednesday April 17 is our Hobo Dance. Come and dance away the 1040 blues. Wear whatever you have left after taxes. Bill Ryan will call and cue.

There is no dance on Wednesday April 24. This dance has been skidded over to Friday April 26 and will have an International Night theme. We will have a live cuer—Lisa Treichler. Gil Porter is calling. Dancers are requested to bring their best foreign costume.

Wednesdays May 1 and 8 are regular dances, described above.

Wednesday May 15, 7:00–10:00 is a major event—Amateur Caller Talent Night. It isn’t every year that you get a chance to win a dangle or maybe even a frog! Furthermore, just let it be known in your club that you’ve thrown your hat into the ring and you will have a cheering section supporting your effort.

Wednesday May 22 is a regular dance.

Wednesday May 29, 7:00–9:30 is our annual Red, White, and Blue Dance. Your suggested apparel colors are red, white and/or blue. Admission is free for Mainstream Class of 2019 graduates. This is a class/club dance.

Wednesday June 5, 7:00–9:30 is our Trail’s End Ice Cream Social and our last dance (excluding the summer picnic) until Fall. This dance will alternate between Plus and Mainstream Squares, with Gil Porter calling.
