Cayuga Cut-Ups

Summer is here and the Cut-Ups are reviewing and learning Plus with Ron Brown! We are excited to dance at Bailiwick Market and Cafe in Elbridge for June and July. Bailiwick has homemade local items and great food, not to mention homemade ice cream! Bailiwick is operated and owned by spouses of a local dairy family. Bailiwick is still new to Elbridge and quickly becoming a local hangout! We will be dancing in their outdoor gazebo with overhead fans and screened in area. Ron will be reviewing and teaching Plus. He will graduate Plus Dancers on August 22 at our Annual Ice Cream Social. August we will move back to Auburn at our home church, Auburn United Methodist, 99 South Street, Auburn NY. We dance at 6:30 regularly. We would love to see visitors this summer and encourage everyone to sharpen those Plus skills!

Our Hawaiian dance June 8th is the last dance of the season. We resume in late September. Meanwhile,

we default to the Southern Tier Wheelers for the summer months. They have a nice airy up-stairs dance hall at the Camp Bell Camp Ground, not far from us.

Next Fall, we will be encouraging non-dancers to come (includes children) for a special dance tip, just for them. This only applies to nights when Jim Gotta is calling. Please call Diane in advance. She doesn’t bite! We believe it is healthy to get out and join the fun.

Our Facebook account is not serviced at this time. But it is still there with photos.

Cloverleaf Squares

We are proud of our 2019 Mainstream graduates: Kathy Buechel, Katherine Cuyler, Christopher Ferra, Simone Harter, Victor Harter, Debbie Monson-Mercado, and Thayton and Darlene Traughber. Mike Callahan and Jim Gotta were their very capable teachers. Our class thoroughly enjoyed using their new skills to have a great time at the Dance-O-Rama. Most began our Plus workshop and the beginning waltz Round dance class in early May. We hope they continue their dancing throughout the Rochester area.

The club has begun its planning for our 50th anniversary dinner and dance next year. It will be held at the Diplomat Event Center on Lyell Avenue in Rochester on March 15, 2020. We would love to see area dancers attend and dance with current and past members. Look for flyers and posters and keep your calendar free.

We have moved to our summer digs. It is air-conditioned and easy to get to. We have a Phase II waltz Round dance teach starting at 5:00 and then a Plus workshop then review from 7:00–9:00 with 2x2 from 8–9, and regular Plus dancing from 9:00–10:00. We have our welcome mat out on Sundays for all area dancers. It is a great way to keep dancing even when other clubs are taking a summer break.

We feel particularly proud of Cloverleaf members Jim and Lurine Gotta for being the recipients of the Daphne-Norma Leadership Award as announced at the last Dance-O-Rama. They have been tremendous supporters of our club and its members. They have truly been angels helping with our class and being there for our regular members. They bring their high level dancing to enhance every square for a more enjoyable experience.

We are having a July Fest this July 27. It will be on a Saturday with Betsy and Roy Gotta at the Henrietta Fire Hall. She is one of the best callers and he is one of the best cuers in our region (if not the nation). Do not miss this dance. On the Friday before, Betsy Gotta is calling an A2 dance in the afternoon. Roy Gotta & Alice Bubel will be having a Round Dance Party Friday, July 26, from 7-9:30, phase II–IV.

Our open house events are coming up on September 15 and 22. We want to introduce square dancing to the public and hopefully start a new class for ourselves and other clubs.

Grand Squares

Our 2018–2019 dance season is coming to a close. Our last dance was Thursday, May 2 at Roth Junior High. We have survived because of many things: club members who have paid a membership fee for the year; Mike, our caller, whose enthusiasm and skill have made dancing fun (and our fill-in callers too); the faithful custodians at Roth who prepare our place to dance without complaint and then return it to its cafeteria function; our Treasurer Ray (and those members who filled in when he was away); and last but certainly not least our guests whose spirit and monetary support allowed us to make it through another dance season.

We don’t have a crystal ball to see the future, but we can savor the memories of the year past and take advantage of the dance possibilities offered by other clubs during the summer. Support and welcome the new grads and encourage their continued participation and enthusiasm. They are our future. Square dancing is good for the body, the mind and the soul, so KEEP DANCING.

A Happy Summertime Stretch

** The FIRST TENT PEG of our summertime dance stretch, in years past referred to as our Trails End Dance, is no longer a pot luck dance. It has been rechristened an Ice Cream Social Dance (ICSD). Why? Once we made the switch, there was no going back. Ice cream belongs to the summertime, and a dish to pass is a logistical burden lifted from every cook in attendance.

Details: The ICSD is scheduled for Wednesday, June 5, starting at 7:00 and ending at 9:30. The location of the dance is the United Church of Pittsford, 123 South Main St., Pittsford, N.Y. Gil Porter will be calling. As a subliminal touch, our flyer for this dance is printed mostly in chocolate.

** The MID-SUMMER TENT PEG dance is our Summer Picnic at the North Lodge at King’s Bend Park in Pittsford. The North Lodge is perfect for our picnic/dance requirements. Refer to our flyer Picnic Time for the Village Squares. Notice that the club will provide burgers, hot dogs, rolls and condiments, water (including ice), and plates, cups and utensils, which leaves only a dish to pass, your favorite beverage, any game you would like to play, and lawn chairs for you to bring.

The date for the picnic/dance is Wednesday, July 24, 2019. Games and communing start at 3:00. Supper starts at 5:30. Dancing starts at 7:30. Gil Porter will call. Attendance costs $10 per person. RSVP Tom Powers by July 20. Tom can be reached at 585-770-4700 or tfpowers55@gmail.com.

** With a LATE SUMMER TENT PEG we are closing the summertime dance stretch with a very familiar dance: A Welcome Back Potluck Dinner and Dance, Wednesday, September 4, 2019. The caller, the admission, the church, and the location are all the same as the first tent peg dance above. To this we add the essentials of a traditional potluck dance. These include greetings and appetizers starting at 6:00, pot luck at 6:30, dance at 7:30. Bring tableware, and a dish to pass, and let the organizers know you are coming to the potluck so we can set a place for you.

** Why will the Potluck Dinner and Dance be successful? For a very silly reason: Calendars tell us autumn begins September 23, but for ordinary people fall begins on Labor Day, which this year falls on September 2. In truth, given the chance, people are ready to mentally abandon late summer for the social stimulation of early fall.

** One of our favorite fall dances, our Barn Dance, is scheduled for Wednesday, September 11, 2019. Dancing extends from 7:00–9:30. Country clothes are requested. This dance is free to 2018 and 2019 Mainstream graduates. The caller will adjust the calls to best meet the dancer skills. The caller and the church address are the same as mentioned for the first tent peg dance mentioned above. For further details refer to our Barn Dance flyer.

LOOKING AHEAD: Village Squares Plus-Level Fun-Shops begin Wednesday, September 18, at 7 p.m. Admission for first-time Fun-Shop attendees will be free. Check out our flyer for the latest details.

Waterwheel Squares

In planning our 2018–2019 dance program, our club decided to hold two open houses, one during the month of September and another in April. Our September class has successfully learned the Basic and Mainstream programs and this summer they will be learning the Plus program from 8:30–9:45 each Tuesday.

They are also looking forward to helping the new April class dancers who will be learning Basic and Mainstream from 7:00–8:30 each Tuesday during the summer.

We dance Tuesday evenings all summer long.

For those of you who may not have heard, Larry Dunn, the founder and caller for the Village Squares in Buffalo for almost 40 years, passed away suddenly in early March. His passing leaves Waterwheels as the only active Square dance club in the Buffalo area. Most of the Village Squares dancers have started dancing with Waterwheels and it has been great having them with us, but I am sure all of us would vote to have Larry behind the microphone again.
