Boo Bull Squares & Rounds

Our Friday afternoon club has been having a lot of fun dancing both rounds and squares. After the dance, a group of the dancers have been heading to Leroy to the Leroy No Finer Diner for an early dinner. What fun we have been having sharing dancing, food and friendship!

Our club is now closed for the winter. We will resume dancing in the spring when we return from Florida.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of our friends. May the new year bring you love, peace and health!

Cayuga Cut-Ups

Our new club year has started slowly for new dancers; therefore we will continue seeking dancers, starting folks when they come! Our club is continuing the Fall/Winter location at Weedsport United Methodist Church, 2477 East Brutus Street, Weedsport, off exit 40 on the Thruway! We have plenty of space to dance and gather together. All are welcome to the winter festivities. December 18 is our annual White Elephant Gifting Party; it is the perfect time to re-gift items from your home that work, are silly or interesting, etc. Everyone attending the party must bring a wrapped re-gift (no shopping involved). Gifts are placed on a table, members draw a number and the gifting and playing begins. It is a hoot!

In January we will celebrate the Lunar New Year with friends, wearing red for good luck, and most likely Asian food. That will be January 22! Come and enjoy!

In February we celebrate Valentine’s Day on the 12th with delicious pies! It is Pie Night, one can only imagine the delights that afternoon! Remember we dance 2:00–4:30, Sunday afternoons. Keep dancing,

We have ten folks currently taking lessons (two from last year’s class are attending as angels). One of our new class members came to us late in the class sessions last year. She was so eager to dance that she began taking two-step round dance lessons with Alice Bubel last summer. So now she can dance some of the round dancing between class tips.

Our Thanksgiving potluck dinner went very well. Our members’ turkeys prepared at home were the highlight of the evening. Guests made the dinner even more special. We were able to work off some (but not all) of the calories by dancing after dinner.

Our upcoming dance themes include Santa/Elf night on the first Sunday of December and the Holiday dinner later in the month. The Holiday dinner will be catered by Giuseppe’s Catering and will feature Chicken French and Roast Beef Burgundy. Check the flyer on our website for additional details. There will be no dance on December 25 or January 1. Visit our website to peruse our themes for January and February.

Southern Tier cuer Lisa Treichler will be with us on December 11. Local caller Jim Gotta will be with us starting January 15. Be sure to cram in all your Mike Callahan dancing before he leaves for warmer Arizona.

We began the fall season with our Rusty Hinge Dance on September 10. Our Western Dance Night was September 24. Western boots, shirts, bandannas, and cowboy hats were plentiful. Mike Callahan enhanced the atmosphere with tunes such as: “Ghost Riders in the Sky,” “Back in the Saddle Again,” and “I Was Country When Country Wasn’t Cool.” Appropriately, the evening ended with “Happy Trails to You”!!! Thank you, Mike!!!

Copy Kitten Classes began with an Open House on September 20. Five squares danced at the Scribner Road School, 1750 Scribner Road, in Penfield. Basic and mainstream classes are held from 7:00–9:00 on Tuesday evenings. It was wonderful to see over 20 new dancers smiling and having a great time. Ron Brown, our Class Caller, had the Kittens dancing within minutes. Club members assisted. Experienced dancers are welcome to join us as “angels” to enhance the learning experience for these future Western Square Dancers. A short, plus-level refresher is offered from 6:15–7:00 for those who volunteer as “angels” from 7:00–9:00.

Ten Copy Cats members attended the first annual Autumn Leaves Festival in Brattleboro, VT. Please refer to the Photo and Features section for a recap of this fun weekend.

Grand Squares

It certainly has been a wonderful fall—for several reasons. First of all, the weather has been beautiful. Secondly, our club has survived surgeries, broken bones and back injuries. And thirdly, we have been blessed with faithful club members and equally faithful guests (some even bearing edible gifts.) Thanksgiving may have come and gone, but not the thankful spirit we acknowledge.

Our winter schedule is more limited, but we will dance once a month, weather permitting. These evenings will be Thursdays, December 1, January 12 (our big "Christmas in January" dance), February 2 and March 23. We are privileged to have Jim Gotta calling during Mike’s winter absence and Terry with her line dance wherever possible.

We dance from 7:00–9:00 at Roth Junior High, 4000 East Henrietta Road and welcome all plus dancers. We are working on a more ambitious schedule for April and May, so stay tuned for future updates.

We are located in the Greece United Methodist Church at 1924 Maiden Lane in Rochester, NY 14626. The cost is $5.00 per person. We welcome anyone who would like to join us. We follow all COVID precautions. We have sanitizer and masks available and encourage people to wear masks if they feel they would be more comfortable. Food is now allowed at all dances along with the prepackaged snacks. Please call Don or Anne for any updated COVID procedures (585-317-6442)

Silver Squares did NOT offer dance lessons this fall. We are happy to talk with anyone interested in square dancing and refer them to clubs that are offering dance lessons. We welcome anyone who is interested in dancing to call or come visit us. Call Don or Anne for any information.

Our theme parties continue to be extremely successful. In September we started off with a Welcome Back Dance. Free pizza and soda was offered and we had a house full! We dressed up as cowboys and cowgirls for our Western Dance, and kicking off our fall we hosted a Welcome to Autumn Dance. Our many cooks and bakers brought in a variety of soups, sandwiches, salads, and of course, DESSERTS !! We ended October with a bang with our annual Halloween Dance.

November 7 was our Veteran’s Dance to honor our vets. We dressed in patriotic colors! November 21 was our annual Thanksgiving Feast. This was the first time in two years that we were able to bring in food to share at Thanksgiving. How exciting it was to enjoy a Thanksgiving Pot Luck with square dance friends. Feasting started at noon and dancing started at 1:00p.m.

Looking forward we have a busy schedule for square dancing!

Save the Date…December 12 is our Christmas Dinner and Dance. Dress up in your favorite Christmas outfit! Come prepared to dance at 1:00 and have a catered dinner at 3:00. Forest Hills will be catering a delicious dinner that we can share with our square dance family. Cost is $12.00 per person. Make reservations by December 5, 2022.

Village Squares

Even though our schedule has been limited, those few of us “Squares’ who are left—plus a few of our friends from other clubs—have greatly enjoyed returning to the in-person dance floor in Pittsford, with caller Gil Porter.

At two dances, we had enough for two squares, but on other dates we were limited to only one square.

In view of this, and given the expected loss of our snowbirds, and all the variables of winter scheduling, those present at our November dance voted to suspend dancing for the winter months—meaning January, February and March. This decision is supported by feedback received via email from several other members.

(Accordingly, we have canceled the two dances originally scheduled for January.)

Our full-masking COVID-19 protocol has surely kept a few dancers away, but a few others have said they would not dance without full masking. In the spring, we will review our COVID-19 protocols with our host church and with our members.

In other news, at our October dance, we said a fond farewell to long-time members and officers, Circle of Service award recipients and dear friends, Carl and Susan Thomas. They are moving to a senior living community in Kansas City, bringing them close to younger family members. Moving day was in mid-November. We wish them well in this new life chapter.

Waterwheel Squares

On October 17th Waterwheels held a dance party to celebrate our one-year “return to dancing” anniversary dance after COVID-19 had shut us down for 86 weeks. We celebrated with a pizza party and a great night of dancing with Jim Gotta and Elaine Nicholls on squares and rounds.

Waterwheels is also graced with having two of our dancers celebrating their 90th birthdays this fall. Both Carl and Waudell attend almost every dance and still get up on the floor dancing!

Please see our schedule elsewhere in this issue and join us for a night of fun. We dance on Monday nights from 7–9PM.
