Tuesday night workshops have been successful. We have been looking at both mainstream and plus movements.

We had to move to the West Henrietta Baptist Church for our dancing in October.

Our last dance was held on November 30th for this year.

We plan to begin dancing again in May 2022. Watch for ad for information about time and place.

Our Friday afternoon dances have been a lot of fun. We continued to dance at the firehall for this dance.

Our last dance for this year will be December 3rd. This will be our Christmas party. Please come and join us some afternoon for squares and rounds and fellowship.

Dancing will resume in May 2022. Watch for our ad for details.

We hope everyone has a joyous and healthy holiday.

Happy Holidays to all! We are so looking forward to the holidays this year. The Cut-Ups are planning class/club activities to include our famous White Elephant Christmas Party. This year December16 is the party at Weedsport United Methodist Church, 2477 East Brutus St, Weedsport 13166, from 5:30–8:00. All are welcome. Bring a White Elephant gift (No shopping. Bring gag, funny items from your house; this is the perfect time to re-gift!) One gift /person to play the game, and of course, food, fun and dancing to Christmas music included.

In the New Year, the Cut-Ups will begin our Winter Time change; we will dance on Sundays from 2:00–4:30. We dance at Weedsport United Methodist in January, February and March on Sundays in the afternoon, so no driving at night! January 30 is the Lunar New Year Party, February 13 is the Valentine’s Party. Guests, friends and new students are always welcome!

Keep dancing!

We are back dancing at our regular places; the Chili Baptist Church during winter and the Henrietta Fire Hall during the summer. We are following each venue’s request to keep ourselves and the halls virus free. We ask all visitors to help us in this regard.

We had grand theme dances recently. Our Halloween Class/Club dance was well attended with some very fine costumes. It is always fun to get a little crazy with ourselves. We also collected donations on behalf of Honor Flight of Rochester. The money we collected will help to “fly our heroes to Washington, DC to visit and reflect together at their memorials.” We had another Class/Club dance during our Thanksgiving Dinner dance. Pot Luck is a wonderful way to share our bounty with one another. Dancers enjoyed the various items that people brought in.

In December we will have another opportunity for area dancers to participate in a theme night. On December 5 we are having a Santa/Elf dance. Perhaps we will have Santas and Elves visit our dance and show how dancing is done at the North Pole. We will have another Class/Club dance during our Holiday Dinner dance on December 19. There will be no dance on December 26 and January 2.

The club will be changing its board members on the first of the year. Our most critical position to be filled is that of the President. Henry Capron has been president for six years and is ready for a rest. He and Nancy Thompkins guided us in preparation for our very successful 50th-anniversary party in March 2020. He stepped up to get the club moving to reestablish itself after the worst of the pandemic months.

Our class is doing well; it has gathered inexperienced and former dancers as well as new dancers. We are seeing dancers from all over the Rochester area. They all blend in very well at our class/club dances. Thanks to Mike Callahan for bringing the class to its current level.

Our email newsletter has been well received. Originally it was being sent out to friends and members in preparation for our returning to dance but folks have asked for it to be continued. We have removed a few folks who have opted out of the newsletter but added more who have heard about it; including dancers no longer dancing. If you do not receive it but would like to, contact us at cloverleafsquares@gmailcom.

Copy Cats

The Copy Cats and caller Ron Brown are providing Mainstream and Plus Refresher lessons on Tuesdays 7:00–9:00 at the First Baptist Church of Penfield (1862 Penfield Road, Penfield). The cost is $5/person.

The Copy Cats resumed dancing on September 11, 2021 with our Rusty Hinge Dance. Mike Callahan and Jim Gotta provided the entertainment to our fully-vaccinated dancers. The First Baptist Church of Penfield has opened their doors to our refresher classes and dances with the proviso that only vaccinated individuals attend. We are following CDC guidelines for hand sanitizing and cleaning during and after our classes and dances.

At our September 25 dance, we all said goodbye to our Co-Presidents, Mary Martin and Phil LaRussa. They have purchased a home in Virginia to be closer to their children and grandchildren. We thank them for leading the Copy Cats through the trials and tribulations of the COVID pandemic—keeping the Club alive with emails, video chats, phone trees, etc. We wish them well and hope to meet them in a square here in Rochester, at WASCA or another national square dance function. We thank our caller, Mike Callahan, and cuer, Eileen Webster.

On October 9, Mike Callahan and Alice Bubel provided music for our dance. We are seeing an average of 3+ squares at each dance. This is different from pre-COVID days when we regularly saw 6–8 squares or more. Our Halloween Dance was held on October 23. The Hip Boot Boys and Eileen Webster provided ghoulish strains. (See our article in the Photos and Features section of the Promenader.)

Also at our Halloween Dance, we informed our membership that there will be an upcoming special election because we are currently operating outside the By-Laws. A slate of Board Members was introduced and additional nominations were requested via email. With no more nominations received, an election was held and the slate of Officers was elected unanimously. They were installed at our Veterans’ Dance on November 6.

The Copy Cats have a lot to be thankful for. In the past, our members have provided donations to the Penfield Ecumenical Food Shelf (PEFS). This year was no different. At our Refreshers, Veterans Dance on November 6 and our Thanksgiving Dance on November 20, we collected pasta, spaghetti sauce, cereal and monetary donations for the PEFS. The PEFS is grateful for the Copy Cats’ continued support.

The Copy Cats will be holding two December dances—On December 4, Mike Callahan and Jim Gotta will call and cue our Winter Dance. December 1, will be our annual Holiday Dance and Catered Dinner. This year, on December 18, we will be also celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Copy Cats! Our Class caller, Ron Brown, and our Club caller, Mike Callahan, will harmonize and reminisce with some of our favorite songs from the past 50 years. Eileen Webster will cue. Attendance will be limited to vaccinated members and guests (Watch for Flyer in the near future).

On Saturday, November 20, 6:30–8:30, is our Turkey Trot dance over in Bliss at the recreation hall (see our flyer). We are planning our Christmas dance in Bliss as well, but aren’t sure yet of the location or time. We are planning on doing the Pancake dinner and dance on March 15 with further details to follow. We’re not planning very far ahead at this time, since plans are always changing. Our club is slowly getting new members and our dances now average close to two squares. We have a possible new member coming this week.

With the approach of winter and the threat of ice, cold and snow, attracting dancers becomes more difficult. In spite of the generosity of the school district, dance nights’ proceeds usually do not leave us enough to pay our caller. This makes planning difficult. Our caller Mike Callahan will be gone for several weeks on a well-deserved vacation, so we must secure a substitute.

We have planned a dance for December 2 and will hold our “Christmas in January” dance on January 6, 2022. Hopefully we will have at least one dance each month with a substitute caller. Check the Promenader for our latest dance schedule. We dance at Roth Junior High in Henrietta from 7:00–9:00 on selected Thursdays.

Silver Squares

Our regular Monday afternoon dances started early in May. We have been excited with the turn out and the genuine happiness and kindness of all who attend. We dance every Monday afternoon from 1:00–3:00 and dance Mainstream, Plus, and Rounds. Our caller is Mike Callahan. We are located in the Greece United Methodist Church at 1924 Maiden Lane, Rochester, NY. We welcome anyone who would like to join us. The cost is $5.00 per person. There is no better place to be on a Monday afternoon for dancing, laughter, and friendship!!

We follow all COVID precautions. It is your choice to wear a mask or not, but if you have not been vaccinated, you will be required to wear a mask.

Our themed parties have been successful. The Ice Cream Social, Western Dance, Soup and Salad, and Halloween Dance have been hits. Diane and Richard Cundra came in as First Place Winners for the best costumes with Rosie Holley as a close runner up!!

Our annual Thanksgiving Dinner Dance will be slightly different this year. We ask that you bring your own lunch and the club will provide individual snacks and desserts. The lunch starts at noon and we start dancing at 1:00.

The Christmas Dinner Dance is on December 13 at 3:00. It will be catered by Forest Hills Restaurant and will cost $10.00 due by December 6. The Silver Squares Committee will serve up the delicious food to each person. We will dance first and then have time to socialize and enjoy a wonderful dinner. Everyone is welcome to attend. Call Don or Anne to reserve your dinner. Checks are made payable to Jim Lee.

We start the New Year off with a BANG with our Hawaiian Dance on January 3. Go thru your closets and see what you can find to wear. Dig out those grass skirts!! Then on January 10, we have a Free Pizza Party and on January 31, we are having a PIE DANCE. Yes, we are eating our way right through January.

Our Valentine’s Dance is on February 14. Even though it is in the middle of the afternoon, it will be a most special dance. We are asking that everyone dress up for this dance and be ready for a good time. Dress up can mean your most beautiful clothes either in square dance or regular apparel.

On February 28, we are having a Skirt Dance. Ladies, wear your favorite Square Dance Skirt!!

March 14 is our St. Patrick’s Day Soup and Salad Dance. Come at noon and dance at 1:00pm. We again plan to have you bring your own lunch and we will provide snacks and desserts.

We welcome all who want to come and dance at Silver Squares. It is a fun place to be on a Monday afternoon.

Village Squares

With the local community risk rating so far above our comfort threshold, the Village Squares will remain on our COVID pause at least through the winter.

Time has marched on, and in the past couple of months we have permanently lost two more beloved members: Nick Haldoupis and Sally Emmel. Our hearts ache for their families and friends.

I would like to say a personal thank you to all of our dear dancing friends who sent cards during Sally’s illness, or after her passing or who took part in her memorial weekend. And a special thanks to those who helped us out in so many ways over the past many months, and who continue to take some of the weight off my shoulders now. Thank you!
