We begin dancing on Wednesday May 10. We hope we can get enough dancers to continue this club. At this time, we are not sure what we will be teaching this summer, so for the month of May we will just dance Phases 2 & 3 and review as needed. We are dancing at the Henrietta Fire Hall 7:00–9:00.

If anyone has any suggestions about the level they would like to dance or a rhythm they would like to learn, please let us know.

Our class is going well and the angels are enjoying their time with them. Soon there will be graduation and we have a new batch of angels for the next class. Jim Gotta is an excellent temporary replacement for Mike Callahan as our instructor while Mike and Wanda are off in warmer climes.

We are looking forward to our Mardi Gras-themed dance. Many people will have masks and feathers and will be wearing a whole host of bright colors. This dance is one of our more favored ones, so be sure to mark March 5 on your calendar. Another favorite dance is our 53rd Anniversary / St. Patrick’s Dance on March 10. Lisa Treichler will be on hand for the anniversary dance. (There will be no dance for Easter, April 9)

Our board is remaining for another year, with the exception of Eileen Webster who will still be convalescing from her surgeries. Paul Sutton has replaced her as our club’s treasurer. It was good of him to take on this role for the club.

Copy Cats

Our Copy Kittens (basic and mainstream class members) are quick studies and faithful attendees. We want to thank our Class Coordinators, Paul and Debbie VanGraafeiland for their organizational skills and willingness to volunteer to undertake this very important position. We are very fortunate to have the exceptional instruction of Ron Brown, Teacher/Caller. Ron Brown has been our Class instructor for many years. He has done a wonderful job over the years coaching our new dancers. He maintains a log of calls learned and calls remaining to be taught prior to the end of the dance year. He keeps us on schedule. No call is omitted. A light-hearted, relaxed, stress-free atmosphere is Ron’s classroom trademark. Thank you also to all the volunteer “angels” (experienced dancers) participating at classes.

Our catered Christmas Holiday Dance, December 17, 2022, was a class/club dance. It was well attended with six squares on the dance floor. Our Kittens received a warm welcome.

The Winter Wonderland Dance, January 21, 2023, was organized and decorated by the Copy Kittens. Our dance was held from 2–4 pm. The Kittens arrived at 1:00 pm and did a beautiful job of decorating, setting up chairs, caller/cuer tables and sign-in tables. There were pastel snowflakes and icicle lights hanging from the ceiling, white snowflakes on the walls, and even a snowman standing beside the snack table. The Kittens brought snacks, which were thoroughly enjoyed! We had eight squares on the dance floor keeping tempo to Ron Brown’s proficient calling. Eight couples round danced to Lisa Treichler’s excellent cueing. Our banner was stolen by Cayuga Cut-Ups after Ron Brown put them through their paces on the dance floor! We already have plans to retrieve it! Please see pictures in the Promenader Photos and Features section. Many clubs participated in this fantastic event.

Upcoming scheduled dances are listed below. We have two scheduled Class/Club dances. (See the Promenader Dance Schedule and Flyer sections for more details.)

Hawaiian Dance Night: March 4, 2023, Class/Club. Jim Gotta Caller and Cuer.

St. Patrick’s Day Dance: March 18, 2023, Club Dance. Dave Eno, Caller and Chuck Meyer, Cuer.

Crazy Hat Dance: April 1, 2023, Class/Club. Mike Callahan, Caller and Lisa Treichler, Cuer.

April Showers Dance: April 15, 2023, Club Dance. Mike Callahan, Caller and Chuck Meyer, Cuer.

Copy Kitten Classes are held on Tuesday evenings at the Scribner Road School, 1750 Scribner Road, in Penfield from 7:00–9:00 p.m. Experienced dancers are welcome to join us as “angels” to enhance the learning experience for these future Western Square Dancers. A short, plus-level teach/refresher is offered from 6:15–7:00 for those who volunteer as “angels” for the 7:00–9:00 class.

Our club is a Plus level dance club. Club dances follow a 2x2 format, with no early rounds. CDC Guidelines are followed at each dance. We dance two Saturday evenings per month from 7:00–9:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church of Penfield, 1862 Penfield Road, Penfield, NY. We have been experimenting using afternoon hours for some of our dances. These have been well received. Please check our flyers in the Promenader for specifics.

Grand Squares

March is here, can Spring be far behind? Members of Grand Squares are eagerly anticipating the longer days and warmer temperatures of this season of rebirth. As usual we closed out the Christmas season with our Christmas-In-January dance with two squares who enjoyed ice cream and a holiday cake between dance tips. We are grateful to the guests who came that evening as well as those who join us for all our dances.

Back to the present—March is also a time for celebrating our Anniversary—62 years of continuous dancing. The club began as Lima Grand Squares, understandably because they danced in Lima—at the Town Hall in winter and a barn during the summer. We’ve changed locations several times, but we have tried to live up to the title from its early days as “the friendliest club around.” Hoping to lessen the chance of a late winter storm, we plan to hold our Anniversary Celebration on Friday, May 19.

But don’t wait until May to come dance with us. We will dance on March 23, our Welcome Spring dance, on April 13 and 27 and May 4. All of our dances, except for our Anniversary Dance are on Thursdays and all are 7:00–9:00 at Roth Junior High on East Henrietta Road.

Our theme parties continue to be extremely successful. Our Christmas Dinner Dance was well attended with five squares dancing and the dinner catered by Forest Hills was delicious. We dance once a month May thru October at the CampBell Campground, 8700 State Route 415, Campbell, NY. Most dancers camp for the weekend, but walk-ins are welcome at our dances. We dance at the Mainstream/Plus level with rounds in between each tip. However, our callers are very good at calling to the floor. We also offer Super Saturday events which include workshops in the afternoon, dinner and an evening dance…all for a reasonable price. See our posted flyers (in season) for dance details, and see the CampBell website (https://campbellcampground.com) for campground information and local area attractions. Don’t have a camper???? Not a problem. Give Ed a call at CampBell Campground (607-527-3301). They have campers and cabins available to rent. Be sure to mention that you are coming to join us and they will give you a special rate. If you just want to come for an evening dance, consider staying for a while after dancing and join us at the campfire. There is always lots of laughter shared while keeping warm. There are also several nice hotels in the area if that is the style of “camping” that you prefer. We now welcome all dancers to join our club-campers or not!
