Where did the year go? Our Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday Clubs are winding down for the winter. Some of our dancers have already left for Florida and we will be leaving soon.

The last club dance for this year is Friday December 1st. Please join us for our Christmas party and dance. It should be a lot of fun.

Thank you to everyone for the support you have given us to make our club successful for another year. We will be back in May, with our trail in dance. We look forward to seeing everyone.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Cayuga Cut-Ups

Big News—The Cayuga Cut-Ups have started the ‘winter schedule’, meaning we have moved to Sunday Afternoons! Yes, no one wants to drive at night, therefore Sunday works for our church family and dancing family—heating costs! Please consider coming to our White Elephant Re-Gifting Party (12/17/23), shop your house for re-gifts, wrap, and bring one for each dancer in your party! It is a hoot, lots of fun with stealing, trading gifts, etc! January we will celebrate the Lunar New Year (1/21/24) and in February (2/11/24), Pie Night! We are a Banner Stealing Club and hope to dance with lots of folks this year! Keep dancing, Linda English, Club Secretary.

We are well into our Mainstream class; with eight new class members who are all doing well. The strength of our angel cadre is having a great impact on class learning. Many of our recent graduates are engaging in positive renewal.

Again, our Honor Flight fund dance last November raised quite a bit of money to send local veterans to Washington, DC, to visit veteran and war memorials in their honor.

Our Thanksgiving Dinner was a pot-luck extraordinaire. Home-cooked turkeys brought the experience up to the finest level. We worked off our meal with class/club dancing. Nothing is better than gathering for dinner and dancing with our friends.

We enjoy dressing up for our Halloween dances. Our stars of the evening were Ron Struzik, Greg Marling, Eileen Webster, and Paul and Jan Weitz, all winners of our casual judging review.

Speaking of costumes, this coming Sunday, December 3, is our Santa/Elf Night-themed night. Dress up as a Santa or an Elf. Get those ears and hats out, and come and join us.

Be sure to save your appetite for the Holiday Dinner. It will be a catered dinner starting at 5:00 pm with dancing beginning at 6:30 pm.

We are not dancing on December 24 or 31.

Ray Tompkins will be guest calling and teaching on February 4 and 11. On the fourth is our Valentine’s dance. On the eleventh is an afternoon class with angels in attendance. We will not be dancing during our regular evening hours. (That time is reserved for our cheering the Bills in their Super Bowl win).

Copy Cats

Our Copy Cats Open House on Tuesday, September 26, 2023 was a success with over 20 perspective dancers. Fifteen dancers have continued lessons. We are currently not accepting new students. We plan another Kitten Class in the fall of 2024.

Mike Callahan challenged our dancing skills at our Rusty Hinge Dance on September 9. Many of our hinges were pretty rusty having not danced over the summer. Others found that dancing with Gary and Alice Bubel during the summer made us less squeaky. Our Disney dance was a lot of fun. We had five squares dancing. Childhood memories of the Mickey Mouse Club and Walt Disney were refreshed with the tunes provide by Mike Callahan and Alice Bubel. There were a lot of desperados at our Western Night Dance! $1,000 Rewards were asked for their capture. No information is available as to whether any of the suspects were apprehended! Lastly, our Halloween Dance was a success. We danced to The Monster Mash, Purple People Eater and other well-chosen numbers. Alice and Mike did a great job creating the spooky atmosphere for this dance.

Here’s what’s on our dance schedule through the end of February. As a reminder, our dances are held at the First Baptist Church of Penfield (1862 Penfield Road, Penfield, NY) from 7:00–9:00 p.m. unless otherwise noted. We are a Plus-level dance club. Dancing will be in a 2 X 2 format with no early rounds. CDC guidelines are followed at each dance. Please see our website: www.copycatsdancing.wordpress.com and the Promenader for flyers containing additional information.

Dalton Gang dances Tuesday nights in Castile from 6:30 until 8:30, with Ray Thompkins calling. We are having our Christmas party on December 12. Bring a dish to pass and 1 gift for your gender, labeled as such. We had a great benefit this last August in Bliss for CURE. We raised $1,005 total for this great cause and are hoping to make this an annual event. Callers Mike Callahan, Ray Thompkins, Jim Gotta and Gary Bubel and cuers Alice Bubel and Lisa Treichler donated their time. We had a basket raffle which brought in $180 and a donation jar also. Thanks to all the Rochester square dancers who traveled to make this worthwhile event a success. We had four squares on the floor and at least two sitting out. Thanks to all! Grand Squares

Even good things must someday find an end. Not for lack of support at any level did this closing occur. Grand Squares can boast of great callers in the past, most notably Gary Bubel, and our present contributors Mike Callahan, Jim Gotta, and Terry Irvine.

We are also thankful for the Custodians at Roth Junior High who without complaint, for over 20 years, set up and took down our various places to dance. And our leadership was enhanced by fellow officers over the years, especially Ray and Donna McCagg and Gary Albright.

In earlier years, Grand Squares earned the title of the “Friendliest Club Around” and our present members, though few in number, helped to make that title true to the end.

And one of our biggest sources of success was all the visitors who presence and enthusiasm, month after month, enabled us to survive.

So to everyone, Thanks for the Memories.

Silver Squares

If you are looking for something to do on a Monday afternoon, come over and dance at Silver Squares! We dance almost every Monday (Spring, Summer, Winter and Fall) from 1:00–3:00 and dance Mainstream, Plus, and Rounds. We are located in the Greece United Methodist Church at 1924 Maiden Lane in Rochester, NY 14626. The cost is $5.00 per person. We welcome anyone who would like to join us. There is no better place to be on a Monday afternoon for dancing, fun, laughter, and friendship.

We have sanitizer and masks available and encourage people to wear masks if they feel they would be more comfortable. Food is allowed at all dances along with the prepackaged snacks.

Even though Silver Squares does not offer dance lessons, we are happy to talk with anyone interested in square dancing and refer them to clubs that are offering dance lessons. We welcome anyone who is interested in dancing to call or come visit us. Call Don or Anne for any information (Anne at 585-317-6442 or Don at 585-200-0464).

Our theme parties continue to be extremely successful. We continue to have 4 squares weekly and sometimes even 5 squares. We finished up the summer with our Pie Party and Root Beer Floats. The Pie Party was amazing! We had over 91 pieces of scrumptious and amazing pies. Our bakers outdid themselves. The Root Beer Float Party was a great way to end summer and hang out with friends. Starting off September, we celebrated with our Fall Festival with a Free Dance, Free Pizza, and Free Soda. We had a lot of fun visiting and dancing! Our Soup and Sandwich PotLuck Lunch in October was the best ever. We had six different soups, a variety of sandwiches, and many other wonderful foods and desserts. Our cooks and bakers are the BEST. Dancers also brought in donations for the Food Shelf and we donated 91 pounds of food. Look under Photos and Features for pictures of some of these dances.

Our committee has worked hard to put together a calendar full of fun, laughter, and lots of dancing! Make sure you check out the Promenader for any upcoming events or any changes. Coming up we have many event dances. Please look under Ads and Flyers and you will find a calendar through June and individual flyers for each special dance. We have two theme parties a month so there is a lot of opportunity to dance. Just remember that we dance weekly so dust off your dancing shoes and come over to Silver Squares

Call Anne (585-317-6442) or Don (585-317-6442) for any questions.

Come join us anytime! Dance in a Square and Make a Circle of Friends.

Southern Tier Wheelers

While we are excited to see so many clubs holding “Hi Neighbor” nights to encourage new dancers, we are sad to see the end of our 2023 camping season.

The Southern Tier Wheelers are a camping/dancing club and we meet 5 times during the summer at CampBell Campgrounds in Campbell, NY. The campground is just minutes off I-86 so it is very easy to get to.

We will be making some changes for the 2024 season that, we hope, will encourage more dancers to join us. Beginning with our May 17–19 weekend, featuring Betsy and Roy Gotta, our dance on Saturday will be held in the afternoon. We will have early rounds beginning at 1:00 and then regular 2 x 2 dancing from 1:30–4:00. We then will have a social hour with beverages and appetizers. A catered dinner will be available at 6:00. The menu varies from month to month so please check to see what we will be having. We have also created a flyer, located elsewhere in this issue, listing other dates and callers/cuers that we will be featuring.

Have a safe winter, stay warm and keep dancing. We hope to see some of you in a square next year. Yellow Rocks to one and all!

Village Squares

The Village Squares are very sad to note the sudden passing of our caller, Gil Porter. Rochester square dancing has lost a dynamic voice and enthusiastic caller. He will be missed by dancers all around our area and especially by the Village Squares. As dancers, we could always count on Gil to show us something new, and as friends we could always count on a congenial and lively conversation.

With Jim Gotta calling, the Village Squares will maintain our published schedule of “First and Third Wednesday Afternoon” dances (1–3pm in room 218 at the Pittsford Community Center, 35 Lincoln Ave, Pittsford) through at least December (with the exception that we will not dance on December 20).

In December, we will take stock of where we are and decide on our dancing future.
