[President's Corner]

WESTERN NY FEDERATION OF SQUARE & ROUND DANCERS INC.

President’s Corner - September 2024

Where did our summer go? It seems it went by so fast this year!

We are not complaining; it has been a fun summer with so many dances and events to be with our friends.

We hope everyone enjoyed many of the summer dancing opportunities that were available. It was great to see many of our recent graduates joining us on the dance floor and at our demos and picnic events.

We want to thank everyone who has participated in the square dance demos this summer. It is a fun way to share our joy of square dancing. Hopefully the demos will encourage people to try Square Dancing this Fall when the classes begin in September.

We started our summer demos with the Annual Strawberry & Dessert Tasting Festival Fundraiser for the Greece Historical Society on June 17th. Our clubs provided several squares of dancers for the demo despite the heat! Mike Callahan did a wonderful job calling, encouraging the 400+ in attendance to try square dancing and consider attending our classes this Fall.

Our Friday night WNYF Free Dance in June was quite a hit! Over 80 dancers enjoyed dancing to callers and cuers Ron Brown, Alice & Gary Bubel, Mike Callahan and Jim Gotta. It was great to have so many of our local callers and cuers together.

In August, we set up Square Dance displays at the Penfield Library (thanks to Diane Cundra) and Parma Library (thanks to Laurie Cordaro). These displays help spread the awareness of square dancing and the timing before our Open House classes starting in September is perfect.

The WNYF is sponsoring a square dance demo on Sunday, September 8 at the Artists Open Market at Innovation Square, 295 East Broad St. It is the same weekend as the Clothesline Festival at the Memorial Art Gallery, we expect to see a lot of activity in the area. We are hoping it will bring some new dancers to our Open Houses in September.

Anne Granger, WNYF Vice President will be organizing the Square Dance Polo shirt Order starting in September. Orders will be taken through mid-October. Pricing will depend on the size of the order and shirt colors selected. We will provide order information on the Federation Website (squaredancingrochester.org), in the Promenader and on our WNYF Facebook Page: Square Dancing Rochester.

Important Note: The Federation is always looking for volunteers to help with our committees:

  • The Promotions Task Force—critical in promoting square and round dancing, arranging demos, writing articles, etc.
  • DOR Committee—Plans, contracts, organizes, and runs our Annual May Dance-O-Rama Dance & Basket Raffle.
  • The Promenader & WNYF website (squaredancingrochester.org), which are interconnected. The Promenader is our quarterly publication of the news and events of our 16 member clubs and is available on our website. In addition, our WNYF website keeps us connected with club dance schedules along with Federation activities and contact information for our clubs. It keeps us informed of all the upcoming events within our square and round dance community.
In addition to Federation meetings, there is behind the scenes work to be done. This includes designing flyers for upcoming events, contacting people, writing articles, helping with event set up and recruiting volunteers for square dance demos, square dance displays, special events, etc. If you want to join our teams of dedicated dancers who are giving back to the dancing community, please don’t hesitate to reach out to us at dfbjvbhome@aol.com

We are very proud to be part of this Square Dance Community. Not only do we know how to have fun together, we also really care about our members—celebrating the good times and supporting each other in the difficult times.

We are looking forward to seeing you on the dance floor!
