Champagne Whirl-A-Ways

Nine, yes nine, new graduates were born on June 2nd, all are thoroughly equipped for the rigors of the dance floor! Trained and whipped into shape by Mike Herne; consisting of 2 couples, 3 belles, and 2 beaus. Last year’s graduates and class angels joined in with the cement to make 3 squares. All were packed into the training room so no one could escape; ah ha. The new victims are: Pete Houghtaling and wife Sharon, Anthony Parez, Betty Towne, Leroy Graff, Brenda Finnerty, Don Jones and wife Sandy, and last, but certainly not the least, Delores Danzer. We congratulate them for their determination and patience. They have been traveling around. Some of us have already met them.

With the advent of tropical weather, the Champagne Whirl-A-Ways will present Hawaiian Night on June 11 at 7 p.m. Dress loosely and colorfully for this dance. You will be adorned with a lei upon arriving! (I was going to wear a grass skirt as greeter, but decided against it.)

Directions: Take I-390 into I-86, Exit 38. Turn left, at 3rd light, turn right. You’ll see the church. Left into drive between church and police station.

Dance-O-Rama is just a memory now. Congratulations to the new recipients of the Daphne-Norma Leadership Award. They are very deserving and we hope to see you at one of our dances.

Graduation is also over and we’re looking forward to having the new graduates join us this summer for review and the beginning of the Plus lessons. We are also offering basic Two Step round dance lessons from May to August with Mark Thone teaching in May and Jerry Carmen finishing June through August. You can either prepay $45 for all lessons or $4 per week. They will run from 5–6:30 p.m. on Sunday nights at the Henrietta Fire Hall before our regular square dance—teach at 7.

Coming up in July, Ron Reardon will again call for a special dance on Saturday, July 16, with Alice Bubel cueing at the Henrietta Fire Hall. This will be Ron’s second year visiting from Florida. Not a dance you want to miss.

We have two special dances in August. On August 21 Betsy & Roy Gotta will again be spinning their special music. I’ve lost count on the number of years they have been coming and we welcome them with open arms. Betsy is a well-known national caller and celebrated 50 years of calling (she started young like Mike Callahan). Roy plays new and current round dance music to entertain us.

On August 28 it will be our closing dance at the fire hall until next May, with our annual Ice Cream Social. Homemade ice cream and toppings are to die for. There is always plenty to go around.

August also sets the stage for our Open Houses to be held at the First Baptist Church in Chili on September 11 and 18. If you know of any singles or couples wanting to join in the camaraderie of square dancing, please invite them to come with you. Besides being good exercise, it is FUN!

Seneca Silhouettes

Seneca Silhouettes is a comfortable round dance club. We often take time to work out tricky parts. If you are in the neighborhood, we would love to have you join us Mondays from 2:00 to 5:00. If you would like a proposed program, email me at connie.rhogo2@gmail.com before Saturday. We dance at the Trinity Church, 520 S Main St., Geneva, NY. Main Street is Route 14—easy to get to. From the thruway or the south, just stay on Route 14. From Routes 5 & 20, look for the Route 14 sign. After you circle to Route 14, (Main St.), turn left and you are almost there—the first church on your left. Park behind the church and use the door on the left. We are at the top of the stairs. You will find us dancing on a beautiful wood floor.

The program can easily be altered if there is something different you would like to do, and I have it. We rarely cancel, but it is always a good idea to call, just in case something has come up. July 4 is still a question, so do call ahead.

Shirts 'N' Skirts

June will hopefully bring summer and many dancers to visit us in Fulton. On the first Friday night of June, we will be getting ready for our ALS Elaine Eno Benefit Dance. It will be held the next day, Saturday, June 4, from 2:00 to 10:00 p.m. There are guest callers, raffles and food. Check out our flyer in the Ads and Flyers section. On June 3 we will also have our quarterly meeting and election of new officers. The last Friday of June, we will be having our Strawberry Shortcake night. This is a club favorite. Come join us if you can. The club always has enough strawberries for guests.

We will not be dancing the first Friday in July. The rest of July we will have some guest callers and our new graduates will be learning the Plus calls. August will be exciting for us. Our graduates, Jessica and Henry will be having their baby! Who knows, maybe the baby has learned some calls and will be a natural at square dancing. Also, we will be busy getting flyers and ads out into the community for new dancers to join us in September.

Enjoy your summer. Shirts ’n’ Skirts dances all summer in an air conditioned hall. Maybe we will see you there.

Silver Squares

What changes will summer bring to Silver Squares? NONE! We will continue to dance every Monday afternoon with the exception of July 4. It’s an excellent opportunity for new graduates and experienced dancers alike to get that extra practice and, to make it even better; your first visit to Silver Squares anytime between June 6 and August 29 is FREE. So, come join in the fun and know that your hinges will not be rusty come September. As always, we welcome both solo dancers and couples. All dances, except June 27 (see below), will be held at the Greece Methodist Church, 1924 Maiden Lane from 1:00 until 3:00.

We have a couple of very special dances planned. Not surprisingly, there’s food involved.

June 27 is the date of our annual picnic dance which will be held at the Hidden Valley clubhouse located at 199 Hidden Valley Road. Hot dogs are on the menu and those in attendance are asked to bring a dish to pass. We begin this dance with lunch served at noon, followed by dancing at 1:00 p.m. Admission to the dance is $5.00 and an additional $2 for lunch. Gil Porter will be our guest caller. Anyone interested in attending this dance is asked to call acting president Jim Lee by June 20 for complete details and directions.

July 11 is the date of our annual ice cream sundae extravaganza. Sundaes will be free to those attending this dance. So, come on out for a day of dancing and ice cream. It’s an unbeatable combination.

Also, with the 58th Dance-O-Rama behind us, we’d like to thank the volunteers of the Rochester Federation for another wonderful year of dancing. We appreciate all that you do.

Southern Tier Wheelers

The Southern Tier Wheelers are eagerly looking forward to starting our 2016 camping/dancing season. While the winter was much milder than usual, many of us have been getting our campers ready and are looking forward to seeing everyone once again.

We began by hosting Betsy and Roy Gotta at our May 20–22 weekend. Gary and Alice Bubel will be joining us for the weekend of June 24–26. We will not be dancing in July but many members are planning on attending the S’Mores weekend in Morris, Pennsylvania. Our August weekend will be held Aug. 19–21 when we will be thrilled to welcome back Howard and Donna Williamson from Tyroe, Pa. Then, in September, Rochester’s own Gil Porter and Jerry Carmen will be calling and cueing for our (and your) dancing pleasure.

Please consider joining us on Friday night, Saturday night, all day Saturday or for the entire weekend. Don’t have a camper???? Not a problem. Give Ed or Carmen a call at CampBell Campground. They have campers and cabins available to rent. Be sure to mention that you are coming to join us and they will give you a special rate. If you just want to come for an evening dance, consider staying for a while after dancing and join us at the campfire. There is always lots of laughter shared while keeping warm. There are also several nice hotels in the area if that is the style of “camping” that you prefer.

We now welcome all dancers to join our club—campers or not! So consider becoming a member and save on the cost of the weekend. Hoping to see you all in a square soon.

Village Squares

School’s out! With two tempting exceptions, Village Squares is in recess during the summer months.

The first tempting exception is our Trail’s End dance on Wednesday, June 1, which features an Ice Cream Social. The dance begins at 7:30 p.m., ends at 10:00 p.m. and includes 2X2 Plus Squares and Rounds. Jerry Carmen will be calling and cueing. The location is at the United Church of Pittsford, 123 South Main St., just south of the village. Refer to our flyer in this issue. Call Sally Emmel 381-5049 if you need more information.

The second tempting exception is our Wednesday July 27 Picnic at Kings Bend Park. To reach the park, turn north off of Jefferson Road just east of Clover (Route 65). We have reserved the north pavilion. There will be games and socializing starting at 3:00 p.m. Bring a dish to pass, beverage, and lawn chairs. The club will provide burgers and hots, rolls and condiment, plates, cups and utensils. Starting at 7:30 p.m. Jerry Carmen will be calling and cueing. $8.00 per person will be collected at the pavilion. To facilitate the club’s advance purchases, phone Tom Powers by Sunday July 24 at 585-770-4700. Refer to our flyer in this issue.

August is a bye. So let’s take a peek at September.

Our 2016–2017 dance year starts Wednesday, September 7, at the Pittsford United Church with a potluck dinner and dance. The social hour begins at 6:00 p.m., followed by a sit-down meal at 6:30 p.m., followed by dancing starting at 7:30 p.m. Bring tableware and a dish to pass. For the potluck, please contact hostesses Susan Thomas 585-385-2155 (suetinny2@yahoo.com) or Barb Keane 585-787-4061. Dance admission per person is $4 for members, $5 for visitors. There is no potluck surcharge. Refer to our flyer in this issue.

We will be detailing our Plus teach and review workshops in the next issue of the Promenader. These Wednesday workshops are from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., followed by class level dancing with our club until 9:00 p.m. The club dances at a full Plus level from 9:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. Mainstream dancers who graduated in May and are interested in learning Plus calls are particularly invited to join our workshop in September. As a “try before you buy” incentive, we offer first-time workshop attendees free admission to their first session of the season. Experienced dancers who are simply reviewing Plus level calls are welcome to blend in any time. Refer to our flyer in this issue.

Five Fabulous Friday dances were offered by Village Squares during the 2015–2016 dance season. These dances were well attended. Look for a slate of Friday dances, starting in October, in the next issue of the Promenader.

Last, but by no means least, we applaud the Federation for planning and sponsoring the Fall Friendship Ball. The motivating premise is simply this: Our clubs are not insular. The better we know each other, the greater our potential for success. The FFB is being held on Saturday, September 26, at the American Legion Post 256, 454 North Main Street, Canandaigua. The dance is free and will be from 2:00 to 5:15 p.m. Callers are Ron Brown, Gary Bubel and Jerry Carmen. Calling will be at Mainstream and Plus levels. Alice Bubel and Eileen Webster will cue. The dinner following the dance will start at 6:00 p.m. A subsidized price of $12 has been set for the dinner. Look to the Federation for a complete disclosure of details.

August has two special dance nights. The 9th is our Snowflake dance where we all wear white in an effort to cool off on a warm summer evening. The 23rd is our Summer Fling dance. Fun for everyone!

That’s it for the summer months. Pretty simple, so come dance, enjoy great music and good company. Our summer members should be back with us and we always welcome visitors from near and far.
